Have you and your dog been on a long hike or jog through the park?

You’re enjoying your Propel water, but is it ok to give it to your dog too?

The answer is no, you should not give your dog Propel water.

Dogs should drink water to stay hydrated and replenish their electrolytes. Drinks, such as Propel, contain sugar, potassium and sodium.

While this can benefit humans, it is less healthy for dogs.

Keep reading to find out why you shouldn’t give your dog Propel water.

What Is In Propel Water?

Propel is a water-based sports drink that includes minerals, vitamins and electrolytes such as sodium, potassium and sugar to help replenish what was lost after exercising or sickness.

Every 20-ounce serving of Propel Vitamin Boost includes 100 percent of the body’s required daily doses of vitamins A and C.

Propel contains the same electrolytes as Gatorade, which is why it is also not recommended to give your dog Gatorade.

Is It Harmful To My Dog To Give Them Propel Water?

Yes, it is potentially dangerous to give your dog Propel water.

Even after a strenuous day of exercise, all the average dog needs is regular water to replenish any lost electrolytes and maintain hydration.

Propel water is rich in electrolytes and other minerals and vitamins that your dog is most likely NOT deficient in.

When electrolytes in a dog's body become too high, specifically potassium, we can start to see heart arrhythmias and other cardiac complications that can lead to death.

Not only do we need to worry about their potassium levels, but the sugar and sodium that are present can cause weight gain, diarrhea, vomiting or pancreatitis.

Can I Give Propel To My Dog If They Are Sick?

If you are concerned about your dog’s health or well-being, do not give them Propel.

If your dog is truly sick, you should seek veterinary attention and they will do blood work and fluids to address your dogs issues and fix their dehydration.

If your dog’s electrolytes are out of balance (like they commonly are when sick) you could potentially cause an even bigger issue by giving your dog Propel.

What Happens If My Dog Drinks Propel?

If your dog drinks propel, it can upset their digestive system or adversely affect their electrolyte balance.

Dogs don’t need to take electrolytes because they get them from the water they drink and the meat and eggs they eat.

Please contact your veterinarian right away if your dog has ingested Propel water.

It is likely that they will only have you monitor them at home, but if your dog is acting lethargic, confused or is panting excessively afterwards, they may require treatment.

Let Your Dog Have Regular Water

Regular, clean water is all your dog needs to replenish any fluid loss or electrolytes.

Propel water can be dangerous to animals as their electrolyte levels can become deadly when they are unnecessarily replenished.

Not only can throwing off your dog’s potassium levels be fatal but the sugar content in these drinks may cause your dog to become further dehydrated.

If you are concerned about your dog being dehydrated, please contact your veterinarian right away.
